Team North at the Opening Ceremony
Barbara and her team with the Tony Moffat Quaich
The 2021 Veteran Ladies Jamboree was held last week at Glenbervie Golf Club in Stirlingshire. My team featured 3 players from Cheshire, 2 from Yorkshire and 1 each from Lancashire, Northumberland and Cumbria. Although 4 players were new to the Jamboree they all had plenty of golfing experience.
Our opponents on the first day were the hosts, Scotland, and we enjoyed a comfortable 6-3 victory. The second day against the Midlands got off to a tricky start as there was a fire alarm at the hotel, the players had gone but I was trapped at the hotel, unable to access my car keys. After a short delay I reached the course just in time to name my team for the morning foursomes. Things didn’t improve and we lost all three foursomes leaving us with the uphill task of having to win 5 of the 6 singles. Team North responded magnificently and did win 5 matches.
This set up the classic final day encounter of North v South. Each team had two wins but the South had the slight edge over us due to winning 5.5 - 3.5 against the Midlands against our 5 - 4. So we needed 5 points and the South required a win or a draw 4.5/4.5. Again we struggled in the foursomes and were 2 - 1 down at lunch but another terrific fightback had given us 3 singles. This left the deciding match on the course coming down the last all square. We needed to win the hole to take the Salver but it was halved it in pars and the South had won, 16 points to 15.5.
I could not have asked for more commitment from my team, they finished the week undefeated in matches which are just below international standard, indeed there were many internationals playing. I hand over the Captaincy to Sandra for next year’s Jamboree and I hope the team will go just half a point better.
On behalf of myself and the team we want to extend our grateful thanks to all those in the ‘blue army’ who turned up to caddy and support. We could not have managed without you and your contribution always makes a difference. I look forward to joining you next year at Moor Park.
