Northern Championship Report - 2025

Cheshire Golf hosted the 2025 Northern Championship at Sandiway Golf Club

A huge thank you to Cheshire Senior Captain Jane Burke and Cheshire Golf for putting on such a smoothly run event.
Thanks also to Sandiway Golf Club members especially to those who ball spotted and flag waved on the blind holes. Very necessary in the fiery conditions.
Captain Anne O’Neill welcomed all the competitors and was on hand during the competition. Thanks to Gill Lewis who helped the Competition Organisers and to Gill Singh for running the raffle.
A big thank you to the green staff for presenting the course so well in spite of the arid conditions.

The Qualifying Round
The weather for the qualifying round was the usual sunshine!
The best gross scores of the day were from Karen Jobling Yorkshire and Elaine Ratcliffe with splendid 75s. Karen won the Gross Salver and a prize donated by our President Gill Travis on the back nine.
The winner of the best nett with a magnificent score of 67 was Julie Matthews of Cheshire. Sandra Paul of Yorkshire won the over 65s best nett.
Yorkshire swept the floor with the team prizes winning both the Gross Team Shield and the Nett Team Shield.

Matchplay Events

The Second Flight Matchplay
The qualifying score for the second flight was 83. There were some closely contested matches and Captain Caroline Berry of Cheshire played Sharon Eales of Lancashire in the final. Sharon certainly gave Caroline a lesson in putting winning the match 3&2.

Matchplay Event
There were some very close matches in the first two rounds leading to the semi-finals between Karen Jobling, Yorkshire and Lisa Chrimes, Lancashire. The other match was between fellow Yorkshire players Heather Butcher and Lynn Wass.
Lynn and Lisa progressed to the final. This was the first time these players had entered the event.
What a magnificent match it was! Nothing to separate the players after 18 holes so we were off up the 19th hole with Lisa winning the hole and becoming our Northern Champion for 2025.
Many congratulations to Lisa.

Jamboree Team
Captain Caroline Berry, Immediate Past Captain Janet Melville and Vice-Captain Julie Wheeldon will select the Northern Team to play at Kilmarnock Barassie from Tuesday 4th August to Thursday 6th August. This selection will take place after the English Strokeplay in June. Supporters would be very welcome.
