The Northern Championship consists of 2 stages (a stroke play round and match play knock-out) to find the NCVLGA individual champion for the year. It is a three day event for any NCVLGA member who has a handicap 20.4 or below.
There are Gross and Nett trophies and prizes together with Gross and Nett Team Shields (being awarded for the best 3 combined scores of players from one County) following the Day 1 strokeplay round.
There is also a trophy for the Best Nett score by a player over the age of 65.
The best 16 gross scores from the first days play, qualify for Championship match play, played over 18 holes. Next 8 best gross scores to qualify for 2nd Flight match play.
Any player who doesn't qualify in the top 24 may, if they wish, play in the 3-player team Stableford competition. The teams go out following the Championship and 2nd Flight matches on the second day.
Following the matchplay stages, the NCVLGA Champion is awarded the "Championship Salver" together with a prize and there is also a salver and prize presented to the runner-up with prizes for the losing semi-finalists.
The winner of the 2nd flight also receives a trophy and prize and a prize for the runner-up. There are also prizes awarded for the winners and runners-up in the Team Stableford.
Each year the Northern Championship is hosted and organised by each County in rotation - Cheshire, Yorkshire, Durham, Cumbria, Northumberland and Lancashire.
Following the Championship the Northern Selection Committee choose their Northern team to representing the Association at the Jamboree. The team shall consist of eight Players with non-travelling reserves selected from the members of the respective Counties.
